Make Every Council Accountable MECA
To get the Minister for Local government to legislate a law to prevent councils pushing through expensive projects which are against the interests of the majority.
Therefore if say 20% of the population sign a petition their council is forced by legislation to hold a referendum to obtain a majority before it can be in implemented.
Why is this important?
Coffs Harbour council is pushing through cultural and civic space and new chambers costing over $81m( maybe $110m) on the casting vote of the Mayor.
15000 signatures and 800 objections have not swayed the mayor and her 3 rouge councillors to listen to the vast majority.
Elections last year would have solved the issues but were postponed by the minister.
This legislation would stop councils riding roughshod over the citizens and ratepayers and ensure the long term betterment of the community.
