Climate Emergency Declaration

Climate Emergency Declaration

1. Declare a climate emergency, and join more than 100 other jurisdictions across Australia that have already done so, as part of strong climate action
2. Set a target of net zero emissions by 2030 or sooner
3. Directly engage the community in planning to reduce emissions to meet this target

Why is this important?

Council has an important role in providing leadership to build resilience to climate change and support projects that reduce emissions. The Council accepts that climate change is a serious issue and has implemented a number of policies and actions to address this over the last 10 years. However, these don’t go far enough and fast enough to prevent our community being overwhelmed by catastrophic impacts to our natural, built and socio-economic environments.
Council’s target of net zero emissions by 2041 is clearly inadequate. Noosa Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 with a target of net zero emissions by 2026.

Reasons for signing

  • I just watched Australian Story. This remarkable woman inventing these amazing ways things can be recycled and reused into meaningful objects (steel, tiles etc). We have the technology - we just don't have the will. Just toss it into land fill and chop down more trees and rip up more land. We can, and should, do better. We have the power of choice. Flora, fauna, and many people, don't. They just suffer our selfishness.
  • Its a way to acknowledge that meaningful action needs to occur.
  • Worried about climate change.
