Stop Toxic Waste being dumped at the Lyndhurst Landfill
Introduction:
The site commonly known as the Lyndhurst tip is situated at 890 Taylors Road, Dandenong South and is in the newly formed State Seat of Carrum. It is the only landfill in Victoria for the disposal of higher levels of hazardous wastes. It has been operating as a hazardous waste landfill since 1992.
In December 2011, the Government gave approval for the construction of a facility to store and treat contaminated soil at this site. In 2013, approval was also given for the use of contaminated soil as daily cover at the tip.
The Lyndhurst tip is now close to many thousands of residents, and the continued use of this site for hazardous waste disposal, storage and treatment is no longer acceptable. Hazardous wastes have the potential to adversely affect people's health and well being.
To: Legislative Assembly of Victoria
We the undersigned residents of Victoria, urgently request the Victorian Government to develop a statewide strategy to manage hazardous waste, to produce a Prescribed Industrial (Hazardous) Waste Management policy, and to cease relying on the Lyndhurst landfill. This will ensure alternative treatments to landfill for higher hazard waste are appropriately researched, monitored and implemented.
We also urge that the Victorian Government determines to introduce a policy to ensure hazardous waste facilities are located in remote areas well away from populated areas.
