Sydney Wants Julian Assange Freed

Sydney Wants Julian Assange Freed

The British government is holding Julian Assange in jail on remand as the US government attempts to extradite him to face 175 years worth of charges for his role as Editor of Wikileaks and its publications exposing US military crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US government seeks to prosecute regular journalistic activities such as receiving and publishing secret information.

Despite a judgement in January that blocked the US extradition, the British government continues to imprison Julian Assange in near solitary conditions, which the UN Rapporteur has described as torture.

The Bring Assange Home Parliamentary Group Campaign is working to secure Assange's freedom. We want our local MP Tanya Plibersek to join the group.

Sydney wants to see Julian free.

Why is this important?

The ability of the media to report freely on matters of public interest is a crucial indicator of democracy. However this right to seek and disseminate information through an independent press is increasingly under attack. If Julian Assange, an Australian journalist can be prosecuted and imprisoned for espionage in the United States, then no media professional or citizen journalist anywhere, is safe to report information exposing government crimes.

The United Nations Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer, has called for Assange’s immediate release, asserting that
“In 20 years of work with victims of war, violence and political persecution I have never seen a group of democratic States ganging up to deliberately isolate, demonize and abuse a single individual for such a long time and with so little regard for human dignity and the rule of law”

Australia must advocate for one its own citizens.

The people of Sydney want to see justice for Julian Assange and call on our elected representative to do all that she can to help free Julian Assange and bring him home.

Reasons for signing

  • Julian is being made an example of... to scare other journalist. He is innocent. Shame on UK USA and Australia.
  • Julian Assange did not commit a crime. He exposed criminal conduct and corruption. He won his court case against extradition. Why is he still locked in a high security prison in London? This is not justice. This is vengeance.
  • Julian Assange used his skills and insight to modernise journalism and bring truth to the world. By doing this he challenged authorities were hiding war crimes. He has been abandoned by our government who deliberately neglect their duty to protect Australian citizens from torture and illegal incarceration by other countries. Julian Assange should be set free as he is being held without a legitimate charge. He is a political prisoner.
